INDUSTRIAL VISIT TO GENSER ENERGY GHANA LIMITED, ANWOMASO BRANCH AND METERING STATION
On Thursday 16th May 2024, third-year students from our Department of Chemical Engineering, KNUST, Kumasi, Ghana, paid a two-day educational visit to the Anwomaso Branch and Metering Station (ABMS) of Genser Energy Ghana Limited in Kumasi.
The ABMS which was recently commissioned by the Monarch of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfour Osei Tutu II on 17th April 2024 forms part of the Genser pipeline network of about 430 kilometers of pipeline and 23 gas stations. The network supplies natural gas from the Prestea Regulating and Metering Station (PRMS) to various thermal power plant sites in the Western, Western North, Central, and Ashanti regions of Ghana.
The educational trip was made possible by the willingness of Genser Energy Ghana Limited to explore exciting, innovative, and sustainable ways of partnering with academic institutions in the realization of holistic human capital needs of industry and the country as a whole, and the Department of Chemical Engineering’s goal of providing engineering education focused on national industrial development.
The visit aimed to provide the students with the practical knowledge needed to complement the theoretical knowledge the students received during training in petrochemical engineering. The learning objectives for the visit were to expose students to the engineering practices in natural gas pipeline operations and management. The trip involved 20 students, in year three of the BSc. Petrochemical Engineering program and two members of faculty.
Upon their arrival, the students were:
- taken through a mandatory safety induction by the engineers of the company
- given a presentation on the overview of the Ghana's Oil and Gas Industry and the operations of Genser Energy Ghana Limited and the role the ABMS plays in the stabilization of the electrical grid of Ghana
- taken through a guided tour of the gas regulation and metering facility
- taken to the control room of the ABMS for a lesson on the process control mechanism of the facility
The visitors from KNUST ended this journey with excitement emanating from the invaluable lessons they had learned.
