Entry Requirements

The Department of Chemical Engineering runs MSc, MPhil, and PhD programmes in Chemical Engineering.

Admission requirements

(i)         MSc and MPhil

  • Applicants must possess a BSc Degree (First Class or Second Class Upper Division) in either Chemical Engineering or other engineering/science disciplines. Candidates with BSc Second Class Lower Division in Chemical Engineering and at least three years relevant experience will also be considered.
  • All applicants will be required to pass an oral interview and demonstrate the ability to fund or prove the source of funds for the research.
  • Applicants for the MPhil programme are also required to submit a synopsis of their research proposal, stating clearly the member(s) of staff willing to supervise the research.

(ii)        PhD

  • Applicants must posses an MSc or MPhil degree from a recognized university. The first degree of the applicant should be First Class or Second Class Upper Division or its equivalent in chemical engineering or in a related field.
  • Applicants are required to submit a synopsis of their research proposal.
  • All applicants will be required to pass an oral interview and demonstrate the ability to fund or prove the source of funds for the research.

Course work

(i)         MSc

The programme is based on course work with a thesis as part of the programme. Candidates without chemical engineering background may be required to take some remedial courses alongside the prescribed courses for the MSc programme.

(ii)        MPhil

            The programme is purely research-oriented.

(iii)       PhD

Courses to be taken by students in addition to the core courses will be determined by the advisory committee of the Department. There is ample opportunity to take courses, which lead to a broader perspective of the candidate. The programme is to take a minimum of two years and a maximum of four years.

Graduation Requirement

(i)      MSc

  • Candidates require a minimum of 48 and a maximum of 54 credit hours to graduate. Candidates without chemical engineering background ought to have passed all remedial courses.
  • Candidates must successfully defend their thesis in an oral examination.

(ii)     PhD

  • The programme emphasizes research leading to a dissertation. At least two original publications should be made out at the results of the research.
  • The candidate ought to have passed all prescribed courses.
  • The candidate should successfully pass a public defense of their dissertation and demonstrate comprehensive knowledge at the particular field of study.
